Every new product we’ve introduced has been defined by a unique input device. With Apple Watch, it’s the Digital Crown. On mechanical watches, the crown has historically been used to set the time and date and to wind the mainspring. We reimagined it as a versatile tool that answers the fundamental challenge of how to magnify content on a small display.

So finally Microsoft spills the beans

Its not surprising that Sony’s share price has increased by 8.54 per cent in the hours following the reveal of Xbox One. To be honest, the reveal was disappointing, the device looked bulky, ugly and yes, its not backward-compatible and it blocks used games, unless you pay a fee to use the same game disk on another device.

And Microsoft again gave much focus on gimmicky voice and gesture capabilities despite the warning of many tech insiders and game designers for the company not to shift away from core games and focus on other entertainment features, besides, who the hell outside America would care about (or get benefited) from the DVR thing and TV show features or ESPN, NFL, or other damned sport things they kept pushing during the reveal?!

Here is a rundown of the things and issues that went off regarding Xbox One, via NeoGaf user nib95:

“Confirmed” Issues:

  1. Forced online activation for all games
  2. Massive emphasis on TV, services and non game related focus
  3. Live TV services available in US only at launch, requires separate device
  4. No headset included
  5. Over emphasis on Kinect interface
  6. Xbox One not being backwards compatible with the 360 games or accessories.
  7. Microsoft’s failed attempts to correct PR with contradicting FAQ’s, vague responses, misinformation.

Hardware:

  1. DDR3 confirmed instead of GDDR5
  2. Potentially Only 5GB of the 8GB ram available for games
  3. Only HDMI for output.
  4. 3 OS’s? At best, confusing, at worst, a nightmare.
  5. Kinect needed to be plugged in for Xbox One to function
  6. Non-replaceable Hard Drive (though not as much an issue, as external drives are supported similar to other consoles)

Problems with the announcement itself:

  1. EA games prerendered using in game assets
  2. COD looked less than stellar
  3. Quantum break reveal was confusing

Unconfirmed issues that still need clarification:

  1. How much is this gonna cost?
  2. Complex used games system that is anti consumer?
  3. How the hell does game borrowing work?
  4. Charged fee for playing used games on non linked profile?
  5. Console that needs to be connected to internet every 24 hrs to play games? (Phil Harrison says one thing, ms backtracked a bit later)
  6. Console quite large whilst still also using quite a large external power brick? (Conflicting reports)

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer:

Photos tell the stories — stories we’re inspired to relive, share with our friends, or capture simply to express ourselves. Collecting these moments is a part of our everyday. Since 2005, Flickr has become synonymous with inspiring imagery. Today, we’re thrilled to take Flickr even further with a beautiful, completely re-imagined experience that puts photos front and center. When it comes to photography, technology and its limits shouldn’t hinder the experience. So we’re also giving our Flickr users one terabyte of space — for free. That’s enough for a lifetime of photos — more than 500,000 original, full-resolution, pixel-perfect, brilliant photos. Flickr users will never have to worry about running out of space.

In my opinion the new layout sucks visually. The shift toward a cover page and grid of images seems a popular trend these days! But the shift is justifiable, they need a minimal responsive design that not only work on desktops but tablets of various sizes which increasingly gaining huge amount of attention; get rid of that fragmentation once and for all.

One point to highlight regarding the new business model Yahoo is carrying out with Flickr; shifting from fully Freemium model to Ad revenue centeric one. This is apparently a trend strongly present in recent games and apps that are FREE but offering ads and/or microtransaction options. I hate that, even if this was the only option for such companies to survive!

But, as there, Yahoo will undergird Tumblr’s nascent advertising business with its large and established infrastructure.

People are concerned as yahoo has a bad record of shutting down its acquisitions such as Del.icio.us, Geocities and Broadcast.com. However, if they treat Tumbler the way Facebook has treated Instagarm till now, I think things will work just fine.

Dan Brown’s Inferno Review: Promised So Much, But Failed To Deliver http://me.gradly.net/2013/05/18/dan-browns-inferno-review-promised-so-much-but-failed-to-deliver/ Sat, 18 May 2013 12:15:55 +0000 http://me.gradly.net/?p=274 ]]> Don’t get me wrong, I think most readers will actually enjoy the book. It’s very much Dan Brown’s standard thriller that conforms to his secret recipe or, shall I say, his successful formula that worked greatly in his previous books; Robert langdon awakes in a strange city, accompanying by a pretty and intelligent woman, roaming around the city, solving puzzles, chased by some sort of assassins, a catastrophe that threatens humanity. These all are standard Dan Brown but despite all the expectations and promises the book potentially hold, it fails to deliver.

Unlike the previous books, Inferno lacks the amount of puzzles and riddles that I, the readers, come to expect, this is where the chilling factor, that I was waiting for, failed to exist. In his previous work, Brown amazes us with things like Cryptix, 666, Pyramids, Obelisks, Ambigrams, Antimatter, etc, while Inferno has its share of cool things but in my humble opinion this didn’t come on par with his previous offerings.

Albeit the secret group referred to as, The Consortium, it doesn’t hold the same wow factor for things like, The Priory of Sion, The Freemasons, Illuminate, Knight Templars, Holy Grail, Opus Dei, CERN. These were sexy topics in which Dan Brown managed to stand out mixing reality and fiction altogether. The absence of conspiracies, secret societies or covert esoteric groups is obvious in this book, unfortunately this was a theme that worked perfectly in the previous books.

There are a lot of fascinating Renaissance ideas and philosophies that were available at Brown’s disposal were only addressed lightly or never mentioned at all such as Galileo, Alberti, and others. It seems like Dan Brown wouldn’t like to address the subjects he discussed in his previous work. I also felt some subjects were entirely forced; things like the use of Transhumanism move as scary topic feels completely unnecessary, the general theme of putting Overpopulation and Dante’s Inferno (recreating hell on earth) seems forced as well. However, I was expecting a thrilling journey that truly takes advantage of the seven sins and the nine circles of hell.

But, this is still entertaining, with Brown’s own style of putting plot twists and turns getting readers hooked with every page turn to expect the unexpected. As always, readers will be overwhelmed by the amount of details, locations and the fascinating history behind them.

Against all odds, Dan Brown still has the ability to keep readers up late at night reading ‘just one more chapter’, this is why the guy is so talented and where he really excels.

Peter Bright for Ars Technica:

According to an internal Microsoft e-mail sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox, “Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today’s Internet.” It continues, “There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should ‘just work’ regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game.”

Although I’m 100% sure about falsity of said feature, but this internal memo sounds fabricated, for several reasons:

  1. Why the heck would Microsoft send an internal memo for Xbox staff telling them about fundamental features that they were undoubtedly working on
  2. “Playing a Blu-ray disc.” Why to mention the Blu-ray disc? They could simply write “Playing discs;” It’s all what the fabricator wanted to tell us that the next Xbox will sport a Blu-ray disc
  3. “Watching live TV” Another one for the fabricator to emphasize the availability of long-rumored TV or DVR capability
  4. “and yes playing a single player game.” Hhhhhhh, really?! Yes must be said to us, the people, to debunk the rumors but not the Xbox team

Sounds like Xbox staff, like the rest of us, were not aware of all of that and the memo comes to the rescue. I can feel how they breathed a sigh of relief after hearing that.

He then said of people using iPad-like devices, “A lot of those users are frustrated, they can’t type, they can’t create documents, they don’t have Office there.”

This is just laughably dumb stupid. Can’t Gates just realize that Microsoft Surface has literally 0.0% market share, a device with physical keyboard and Office yet, no one seems to embrace it?! Not surprising, it’s the same guy who once said the iPad would fail because it had no stylus.

Granted, Apple is still one of the most profitable companies in the world, even if it has lost more value in the past several months (nearly $300B) than most corporations are worth.

For example, HP, which is a much larger company, boasts a total market cap of only $43B. Meaning, you could almost buy 8 HPs at its current worth for the amount of value Apple has lost and, as an investor, you’d probably be far happier having invested in HP over the last 6 months than in Apple.

The whole article is nonsense. The reason Apple’s stock price went so high was about the same as why it dropped dramatically; analysts and investors playing games and making guesses while investors winning or losing on their ‘bets’!

Apple isn’t “broken” to get fixed.
